How to: Update T-Mobile UK Omnia 7 to Mango/7.5

If you are a T-Mobile UK Omnia 7 owner, like me, you will probably know that the Mango update has been given a huge delay due to some ‘testing’ T-Mobile are doing. The other operators in the UK that have sold Omnia 7 handsets don’t seem to be having the problems T-Mobile do and have already rolled out the update. This happened before with the NoDo update, T-Mobile took for ever to release the update to their users.

This guide will show you how you can de-brand your handset so that you can update to Mango or any future updates right away. Plus! It gets rid of all the T-Mobile crap on your phone, like the boot screen and the browser homepage. Winning.

This guide will work for Omnia 7s on any network of course… but most other networks released the update straight away, so there is no need.

(Doing this may void your warranty and you are the only one responsible.) (Credit for this guide goes to Casey_boy over @ XDA)

Note:
Flashing your phone will remove all of your data, so make sure you back it all up before you start.

Step 1.
Check your bootloader will allow download mode by powering off your device, then hold down “VOL UP” + “Camera” + “Power”. If it worked you should see a yellow triangle in the center of your screen.

(If you don’t see a triangle, try again. If it still fails you have a faulty bootloader… Link)

Step 2.
- Download a ROM: Here – This is the Retail United Kingdom ROM
- Download USB Drivers: Here
- Download the Flashing Program: Here

Step 3.
- Turn off your phone and disconnect it from the PC
- Unpackage all the files you just downloaded, and install the USB Drivers
- Boot into download mode

Step 4.
- Connect your phone to the PC
- Open the flashing program, do not worry if you are given an MD5 error. You should see a green COM Port in the bottom section of the program.

Step 5.
- Drag and drop all the ROM files into the flashing program.

Step 6.
- Press Start and DO NOT disconnect your phone from the PC
- Wait until the program says it has completed the flash and then you may input the settings into your phone

Step 7.
- You should now open Zune and check to see if you can update your phone to mango.
- If not, follow this guide on how to force the update using Zune over on WinRumors

Enjoy, and feel free to ask for help or share your experience in the comments section below.

Hi, yes that works great, debranded t-mobile Omnia 7 phone and updated using the disconnection method, now playing with my Mango!

Hi Callumpy, my phone works great now, but does not forward to t-mobile voicemail any more, any ideas? Thanks Simon

        • Simon Jackson

Don’t worry, working now, I used the *# commands to re-enable conditional forwarding.

          • Darren

How did you use commands to re-enable voicemail?

I’m thinking about doing this because I can’t wait for T-Mobile much longer and I want to make sure I know what i’m doing before I do it.
            Thanks

          • Simon Jacksn

Call the following 3 commands to fully activate condition forwarding.

            **61*+44(YOUR VOICMAIL NUMBER)**15#

            eg.**61*+4407987654321**15#

Note: 15 = Seconds delay before going to voicemail, you can change this if you wish

            **62*+44(YOUR VOICMAIL NUMBER)#

            **67*+44(YOUR VOICMAIL NUMBER)#

          • Darren

Thank you! I will be giving this a go soon.

I will post my results :)

    Hi,
I just want to check – does flashing the phone clear all of the data etc. from the phone, so I need to reimport contacts, photos etc etc., or does that all remain in place?
    Thanks :)

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

Flashing your phone will remove all of your data.

Thankfully, with Windows Phone you can sync all of your data to an online server, so definitely do that, and be sure to back up all of your photos to zune before you flash.

  • Tone

Thanks for the guide. Had enought of waiting for T Mobile and last night followed the above and know have Mango running great.

You will lose your past text messages, etc. Back up you pictures if you already don’t have them through Zune or on Skydrive but if you have the calender and contacts set up through a live account for example as soon as you set that up on your phone all the calender and contacts will be restored.

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

No problem, thank you for the comment.

I’m having trouble with com ports.

When I booted my phone into download mode & connected it, my PC told me it was ready to use on com port 3.  When I open the flashing program, however, no ports are green or available.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

    • Thewrights16

This happened to me too first time round. Make sure the drivers are installed properly and once they are, reboot before runnig the flashing software. Worked for me, all set now!

  • http://twitter.com/andrew_paradigm Andrew Elliott

OK, forget that.  Just kept trying & it worked on about the 6th attempt of disconnecting/reconnecting.  Strange but never mind!

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

Good luck with the flash :)

  • ptp29

    Hi
Just wondered – will I lose any of my installed apps and games when I flash the phone?
All my photos automatically get exported to skydrive but how do I export my contacts list to skydrive?
Many thanks – Can’t wait to install mango

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

Yes, you will loose all of your apps and games, but you can just redownload any apps you have purchased off the marketplace when you have finished flashing and updating.

Anything you have synced to SkyDrive can also be redownloaded to your phone once you have flashed it.

For contacts backup, I use google mail. If you don’t already have one, set up a google mail account and then sync your phone with it. It will upload your contacts to google mail which then can be downloaded after the flashing.

  • Massy76

Just worked for me – thanks!  Does this unlock your phone or just remove the branding?

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

      Just the branding :)

  • Thewrights16

Really excellent, no hitches, running Mango no probs! Ran the flashing program, seems to take the software back to pre-NoDo then it installed 4 updates one after the other, ending with the big one! Takes a while, but absolutely worth it!! Great work!

  • Darren

    Hi

Just tried flashing my phone. Did everything correctly. Came up with COM13 port. Pressed start and it said “Confirm MD5 Valve” – “MD5 Confirm Progress” and nothing happened for 30 mins. Disconnected my phone, took the battery out so I could see if anything actually happened. But nothing. Did I do something wrong?
    Thanks.

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

You probably shouldn’t have removed your phone from the PC.

      Try the flash again. :)

      • Darren

I know.. I was hesitant about it.. I was just getting concerned. I’ll give it another go.

        Thanks!

  • Darren

Flashed perfectly after I tried it again. No problems. Still trying to get Mango though by disconnecting internet etc.. Not coming up with update available..

    • Darren

      No worries.. got it working!

Thank you thank you thank you! :D
      All Mangoed!

  • Rimuhith

I’ve done some of the steps however when I run the flashing tool there is no green COM4 box…

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

Make sure you have installed the USB Drivers or you could try like the comment above:

“ I went in Device Manager, with the phone still connected, right clicked on any USB port link and run a search for any connected device, it picked it up straight away.”

    • ljt

I can’t seem to get the flashing tool to see the phone, I’ve tried a couple of different usb ports but to no avail, even tried the scan for new hardware :(

      • ljt

managed to sort it – for those hitting this problem,
        1) I plugged the device in
        2) loaded the flash program – nothing showed up
        3) left the flash program open, unplugged the phone
        4) connected the phone again (with program still open)
        5) ta da – green com port

  • Daniel

thank you. it worked perfectly for me….at last.
problem I encountered was the COM Port not been detected (step 4). to resolve that, I went in Device Manager, with the phone still connected, right clicked on any USB port link and run a search for any connected device, it pickedit up straight away. from there all went perfectly ok. I now have Mango.

PS: if after this anyone notices their MMS isn’t working, the perfect solution: go to Marketplace, then to “Samsung Zone” and install the “Network Profile” app. (set the “automatic network profile changing” to ON). it will pick Tmobile. it’sthat simple.

    enjoy your all new mango

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

      Nice advice :) Â
When I did the flash on my own omnia 7, the Network Profile app was already installed.

      Enjoy Mango :)

  • Rob

this is amazing thank you sooo much ,, just mangoed my t mobile omnia 7 after receiving a mail from them today saying they are not confident rolling out update and it could be as late as jan 2012

thanks again for this so easy to follow.

Thanks for the comment, enjoy mango :)

      • Vtwins

i did everything you said, disconnecting, straight away 1 sec 2 sec etc. still no joy over 3 days. i had old update 7008, got so fed up decided to reset phone to get my original version. 7392 i think. when it updated to this, it did another update, then another! looks like ive been mangoed at last! so to all you what can,t do the net disconnect, reset phone, you,ve nowt to lose. (omnia 7, t-mobile)

  • alan

Is this a full update to mango..? will it have any technical problems after i use this update method?

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

This guide rolls back all the updates and changes the ROM to the retail UK one, so then you can update using zune.

There are no technical problems as the ROM used is an official one.

  • Daniel Li

I am from Hong Kong, is this work for me?

  • Daniel

Excellent guide! Had mango up and running within an hour! Samsung Omnia 7 on t-mobile UK. Everything works great! Thanks!

Hi, when flashing the device what happens to apps I paid for? will they disappear? can I retrieve them?

also in step 3 it says boot into download mode, what does this mean?

Sorry but I am very new to all this kind of stuff.

    Thanks

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

      Hey

      1. You can just re-download your apps from the marketplace.

      2. No. It actually means download mode. Use the instructions in step 1.

      3. They are all the same file but hosted in different places, take your pick.

      4. Make sure you have installed the drivers.

      5. When the flashing program says it is finished, look at your phone and it will have the getting started screen. Just follow the instructions on screen.

      Hope this helps. :)

Hi and thanks for the support,

I have installed a driver [I8700_WP7_Downloader_Ver_7.03_For_Retail_Device__Product_Force_Select__] not drivers?
but the flashing program still does not recognize the phone.

        any more ideas?:-(

        • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

“I8700_WP7_Downloader_Ver_7.03_For_Retail_Device__Product_Force_Select” is the actual program for flashing your phone.

The drivers are a different file.

  • Swammingo

    Hi !

I bought this unlocked 16gb Omnia 7 from Amazon. There is no physical branding, but when it boots, shows the T-Mobile logo and default search goes to the German site.

Can i use the UK Rom on it ? I have no experience in all of this, but the wait for mango is unbearable !

    • Swammingo

Infact when i powered it on for the first time, the default language was German.

      • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

Yes, flash the UK ROM :)

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=521461786 Paul Mallett

So it doesn’t matter if it’s an 8GB or 16GB version? I too have a German T-Mobile model.

          • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

            I don’t believe it does :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=666597534 Ben Jordan

Couldn’t get it to recognize my phone. Got really frustrated and I was literally about to give up. I took out the USB, put it in the next slot and it worked :D
No problemo! Plus it would WP7.5

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

      Awesome, enjoy mango :)

  • Thewrights16

No problem flashing Mango etc but there has been talk that a Samsung firmware/driver update will come with the official Mango update for the Omnia 7. Will it be necessary to flash the pre-Nodo retail ROM again and then let the phone go through all the updates including the new ones to get the Samsung update or will this be notified and instanned through Zune as normal???

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

The ROM that I have linked to in the post is pre-NoDo… so you will need to go through all of the official updates using Zune.

  • Stevo

    Wow cheers dude!

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

      No problem :)

  • http://twitter.com/britishdev Colin Farr

You are awesome. Thank you for this! Worked perfectly. Stupid T-Mobile

    Hi,
I finaly managed to flash the device entered settings as the device requested.
Then Zune started its updates 1 then update 2 and at the end of update 3 there was an error message:-(( now I have a device that says Samsung omnia & but does not do anything else and the zune program does not recognize when I connect it to pc.

    Any ideas?
    Please

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

      Flash again :)

        :-) :-) :-)
        Thank you

    Hi there again.
After re flashing phone worked fine.
Tried to update it and again it got stuck at the 3rd update giving me an error of 801812CE.
Now the screen is stuck and I probably need to re flash it again.
Any ideas about what am I doing wrong?
    Thanks for your patience.

  • Eman

Downloading Mango as we speak, thanks for this wonderful guide. If anyone is in doubt it works 100% fine.Â
    Thank you!

  • Cread

Doesn’t work. Tried connecting to all usb ports and it is recognised in device manager but not in the flashing program. COM4 doesn’t highlight green.

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

      Have you installed the drivers?

  • Graham Allwood

This sounds perfect. Can this procedure be done on a phone that isn’t developer unlocked?

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

Hi there, the developer unlock is for unlocking the OS itself. This process flashes a new OS to your phone. So its not needed :)

  • Graham Allwood

Fantastic! Worked a treat first time.

The only concern I had when flashing the ROM was your screen shot showed a CSC file ending with JJ6.csc, and the one in the download zip ended with jl3.csc, I continued anyway and now I’ve been Mango’d.

    Thanks again.

    • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

Ah yeah, thats just the firmware version.

      Enjoy mango :)

      • http://twitter.com/GravyBod Graham Allwood

Thanks Callumpy. I’m getting curious now ;-) . What would a different firmware version mean to my phone and me? I have just flashed the OS which is also firmware isn’t it?

        Cheers, Graham.

        • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

Yeah, OS/Firmware… The firmware that ive linked to in the post is just a stock ROM that comes with factory shipped retail versions of the Omnia. No T-Mobile bootscreens and all that crap :)

  • WuzzoUK

Thanks for the tip – de-branded and updated to Mango several weeks ago but I see that the actual T-Mobile UK update apparently has tethering included.  Is there a way to get this extra functionality because I’m not being offered it by Zune?

  • slyone666

first link not working so cant do forced update, unhappy now as i have just spoken to t-mobile uk and they not sure when they releasing mango

    • slyone666

sorry about this, but all 3 links are not working.

      • http://www.callumpy.co.uk Callumpy

Oh yeah, it looks like multi upload is down.
You shouldn’t need to follow this guide anymore anyway because T-Mobile have released the update now.

        • slyone666

not sure where you got that info from but when i spoke to them the other day they said no date set for release. just checked for updates now and all it says is its all up to date.
